Cricket words in Nepali and English: a glossary for the game

NPL Cricket League is complete in two languages. You can switch between English and Nepali at any time, and every word on the screen changes with you. This page lists the cricket words the game uses in both languages, with a short explanation of each. Use it if you are new to cricket, or if you learned the game in one language and want the words in the other.

Wherever the game shows a word on screen, the Nepali here is the game's own.

Scoring

English	नेपाली	What it means
Run	रन	One point, scored when the batters cross to the other end.
Four	चौका	The ball reaches the boundary along the ground: four runs.
Six	छक्का	The ball clears the boundary in the air: six runs.
No run	रन छैन	A ball that scores nothing. Also called a dot ball.
Over	ओभर	Six legal balls bowled by one bowler.
Target	लक्ष्य	The score the side batting second must pass to win.
Chase	लक्ष्य पछ्याउनु	Batting second, trying to reach the target.
Tie	बराबर	Both sides finish on the same score.

Getting out

English	नेपाली	What it means
Wicket	विकेट	A batter being out. Also the three stumps themselves.
Bowled	बोल्ड	The ball hits the stumps.
Caught	क्याच आउट	A fielder catches the ball before it touches the ground.
Beaten	बिट भयो	The ball went past the bat without touching it. Not out, but close.
Left alone	छोडियो	The batter chose not to play at the ball.

Bowling: where the ball lands

English	नेपाली	What it means
Yorker	योर्कर	Lands right at the batter's feet. Very hard to hit.
Full	फुल	Lands close to the batter, inviting a drive.
Good length	गुड लेन्थ	The in-between spot that makes the batter hesitate.
Short	सर्ट	Lands early and bounces high.
Line	लाइन	The direction of the ball: at the stumps, or to one side.
Length	लेन्थ	How far up the pitch the ball lands.

Bowling: kinds of ball

English	नेपाली	What it means
Pace	गति	A fast, straight ball.
Swing	स्विङ	A fast ball that curves in the air.
Outswing	आउटस्विङ	Curves away from the batter.
Inswing	इनस्विङ	Curves in towards the batter.
Off-spin	अफ स्पिन	A slow ball that turns one way off the pitch.
Leg-spin	लेग स्पिन	A slow ball that turns the other way.
Wide	वाइड	A ball too far from the batter to reach. One extra run, bowled again.
No-ball	नो बल	An illegal delivery. One extra run, bowled again.
Free hit	फ्री हिट	The ball after a no-ball. The batter cannot be bowled or caught off it.

Batting

English	नेपाली	What it means
Timing	टाइमिङ	Meeting the ball at exactly the right moment.
Perfect timing	उत्कृष्ट टाइमिङ	The best contact. The game shows this in gold.
Early	छिटो	You swung before the ball arrived.
Late	ढिलो	You swung after the ball had passed.
Off side	अफ साइड	The side of the field in front of a right-handed batter's body. In the game: the right half of the screen.
Leg side	लेग साइड	The side behind the batter's legs. In the game: the left half of the screen.
Loft	लफ्ट	Hitting the ball in the air. In the game: the top half of the screen.
Batting order	ब्याटिङ क्रम	The sequence in which a side's players bat.

The match and the people in it

English	नेपाली	What it means
Toss	टस	The coin flip that decides who chooses to bat or bowl first.
Heads / Tails	हेड / टेल	The two sides of the coin.
Captain	कप्तान	The player who calls the toss, sets the order and picks the bowler.
Bowler	बलर	The player delivering the ball.
Batter	ब्याटर	The player facing the ball.
Wicket-keeper	विकेटकिपर	The fielder standing behind the stumps.
Umpire	अम्पायर	The official who makes the decisions on the field.
Innings	इनिङ्स	One side's turn to bat.
Replay	रिप्ले	A slow-motion second look at a big moment.

Words from the game itself

These are not cricket terms, but you will see them on every screen.

English	नेपाली	What it means
Play online	अनलाइन खेल्नुहोस्	Matches with real players, in lobbies.
Practice	अभ्यास	An offline match against Lumi AI.
Lobby	लबी	The room where two sides gather before a match.
Ready	तयार	Tap it when you are set; the match starts when everyone is.
Friends	साथीहरू	Players you have added, so you can invite them.
Report	उजुरी	Tell our team about a player who broke the rules.
Rating	रेटिङ	The number that shows how good a player in a squad is.

How to switch language

Tap the EN / NP button at the top right of the home screen. During a match, the language button sits at the top of the screen next to CAM. Scores change to Nepali numerals when the game is in Nepali, so 6/0 becomes ६/०.

Nepali is not a translation added at the end. Both languages were written together, and both are complete.
